Mercedes Moné Says Leaving WWE Made Her the Highest-Paid Woman in Wrestling

Mercedes Moné is thriving—and making history.

The former WWE Superstar, who walked out of the company in May 2022 alongside Naomi, says her bold decision to step away from WWE transformed her career. In a recent interview with Mone Mag, the current AEW TBS Champion and international wrestling icon revealed she’s now the highest-paid woman in wrestling—a feat she attributes to betting on herself.

“Growing up, WWE was everything to me. I never imagined my life without it,” Moné shared. “But over time, I’ve come to realize it’s not WWE I can’t live without—it’s professional wrestling.”

The Walkout That Changed Everything

Moné, formerly known as Sasha Banks, described her 2022 exit from WWE as the moment that changed the trajectory of her life. Though the move sparked controversy at the time, she now sees it as the start of her most empowered chapter.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t feel grateful for that decision. It matured me into a strong-willed CEO. I took back my power.”

Since leaving WWE, Moné has debuted in AEW (March 2024), claimed titles in AEW, NJPW, and RevPro, and evolved into one of the most talked-about stars in the industry.

Planting the Seeds of Success

Reflecting on advice once given by WWE management, Moné said:

“A higher-up once told me, ‘The grass isn’t greener on the other side.’ But now, every seed I’ve planted is flourishing. Becoming the highest-paid woman in wrestling is the most beautiful flower of them all.”

She credited her fanbase for sticking with her through every twist and turn:

“I’m so thankful for all the fans who believed in me. This journey wouldn’t be the same without your support.”

Bigger Goals Ahead

With her eyes locked on Toni Storm and the AEW Women’s World Title at All In, Mercedes Moné is far from finished. She teased a major story in the works:

“When the time comes, I’ll share everything. And trust me—it’s going to be one for the books.”

Mercedes Moné’s story proves that listening to your gut, even when it means taking a risk, can lead to greatness. She’s no longer just part of wrestling history—she’s rewriting it.
